Speedy BBQ Chicken Legs

Speedy BBQ Chicken Legs

When there is a steal at the meat counter at my local grocery store, I’m there. This past week, the deal of the week in my humble opinion was on chicken legs. They were priced well at $.99 per pound. I was able to get 8 nice legs for less than $2.50. Best part? My kids attack chicken legs any way you fix ’em. Fried, baked, smoked (my fave) or grilled. Sure, we raise pigs… but we’re equal opportunity meat enthusiasts and we enjoy all kinds of meat.

The recipe I’m sharing today is for Speedy BBQ Chicken Legs. These can be prepared on the grill pretty quickly after a simple rub is put on. Once the chicken legs are grilled and cooked throughout, I baste them with sweet barbecue sauce and serve them right up. They are juicy and smoky, and the rub contains sugar, which caramelizes during the grilling time and also chars a bit, which is even more delicious!

Can I just put something out there… it is my personal belief (correct me if I am wrong)

Something yielding smoked flavor = ‘smoky’ (not smokey… unless you are a Bear here to teach my children about wildfire prevention.)
Expensive booze in my house = ‘whiskey’ (not whisky unless it is from Scotland or Ireland, maybe? Again, if you are in my house, it is whiskey from the good ol’ U.S. of A.)

Ahhhh, I feel much better. (I’ve seen lots of interesting restaurant menus lately.)

I’ve got some fun food contests coming up and contrary to popular belief (yes I’m still in self imposed contest-retirement), I’m not entering any of them… I’m judging! More on this later… there’s work to be done.

Happy Easter!

Post-on-the-way… we brought some of our show pigs home, and since they didn’t want to share the spotlight with “chicken legs”, they’ll get a post of their own.

XOXO

BBQ Chicken Legs

These juicy chicken legs are a quick fix and perfect for a party. They are easy to grill up and slather with barbecue sauce. This is an economical choice for a party if you can purchase the chicken on sale. We like this alternative to smoking chicken legs sometimes, to save time.

Servings: 8 chicken legs

Ingredients

  • 8 chicken legs bone-in, skin on
  • 1/2 cup Brown Sugar packed
  • 1 TBSP Seasoned Salt
  • 1/3 cup barbecue sauce any flavor of choice

Instructions

  • Preheat grill to medium high heat (400 degrees).
  • Wash chicken legs if needed, pat dry with paper towels.
  • Combine brown sugar and seasoned salt. Rub over chicken liberally. Depending on your salt-taste, you may want to sprinkle an additional bit of seasoned salt on the legs after you've pressed the rub into them.
  • Place legs on the grill. Close grill lid. Check legs every 5 minutes, rotating each time. Legs are fully cooked when meat (thickest portion and throughout) registers 160 degrees F with an instant read thermometer. This usually takes about 15-20 minutes, but depending on your grill, the weather, the size of the chicken legs, etc. this time can vary.
  • When chicken is cooked throughout, remove legs to a platter, brush with BBQ Sauce and serve immediately. Makes 8 legs.
