Food & Swine

the girls are home

Over the weekend we (somewhat) dove in to tidying up the machine shed to make a nice place for a couple Duroc gilts that we may take to the State Fair.  Their brothers and other littermates and some of Oink’s pigs may go, but these are special girls.  We also showed my husband’s folks around the barn since they hadn’t seen these pigs for a few weeks since we moved them off of their place.  They still have the sows at their house, but these little pigs (now big) are at another location.

We started off with the shocker… “Jackson”, one of the orphans we raised in our garage.

I had to pick my mother in law’s jaw up off of the floor… (he was bottle fed and weighed a couple of pounds the last time she saw him.

Having a pink whip does not phase him, thankfully.

Getting along just fine… these red boars are still young enough to be friendly enough for the little guy.

And Sassy… she’s coming home with us today.

Saying goodbye to her York buddies.

Putting some of Diamond’s pigs back in their pen.  We got quite a few out to show to Grandma and Grandpa.

Can you tell who made out like a bandit from WPX (World Pork Expo) and the bling-a-licious jewelry and accessory sales booths?

Some serious running, barking, woofing and all out horse racing going on.  Pigs are feeling great.

The ears just KILL me!

We had a great Sunday just checking things out.

After we had the gilts loaded in the trailer we came outside.  I had to take my boots off and get my camera, then I came out to this.  Sleeping on the feed bags…

Kidding!

Checking to make sure everyone is comfy.

Sure thing… time to hit the road to Casey’s for the weekly donut and iced tea stop.

Get in the truck before they’re sold out of chocolate donuts with white frosting and sprinkles.

Annnnnnd we’re all home.

Last year we purchased their mama, Cinnamon from John and Ruth Huinker (Huinker Durocs) in NE Iowa.  Some of the money used to buy her came from the prize winnings from Cinnamon Roll contests I’ve won.  (Thus her name, Cinnamon).  These gilts are special and they are really enjoying their new digs.

The kids have already had them out a number of times and we’ve even had a mock auction in the shed with my husband standing in as the auctioneer.  It is fun to have a couple of pigs around at home, I’ve caught our daughter in the pen quite a bit just laying down with them.  (No more excuses for not taking a shower prior to getting into bed… she’s literally been laying in a pig pen!)
